The Sony VAIO VGN-A690 is sold as a digital studio notebook. As a digital studio notebook is comes with an "entertainment dock" that lets you quickly and easily plug in to access Sony's powerful TV tuner, personal video recorder, high-end digital audio amplifier and premium Sony speakers. You'll have all the tools you need to enjoy recorded show playback anywhere you take your notebook. The Entertainment Dock has a built-in TV tuner, Giga Pocket MPEG2 realtime encoder, 4 USB 2.0, VGA, VHF/UHF TV, S-Video In/Out, DVD-D, ethernet port, optical out, and an RCA In/Out jack. This VAIO was designed for the multimedia enthusiast with a 1.86 GHz Intel
Pentium M Processor, 1 GB PC4200 533MHz DDR2 SDRAM (expandable to 2 GB), and a 17" Wide UXGA LCD with a native resolution of 1920x1200 and XBRITE Technology and ErgoBright Technology. Sony states XBRITE Technology is "Brilliant colors, sharp contrast and crisp graphics combine to deliver dramatic, eye-catching video from nearly any viewing angle. Other displays seem to pale in comparison.", which should be great for us digital video enthusiasts. The video is powered by an ATI Mobility Radeon X600 with 128MB of DDR SDRAM.
For storage, you get a 100 GB 5400RPM SATA hard drive and a DVD burner with write speeds of up to 2.4x DL DVD R, 8x DVD R, 8x DVD-R, 4x DVD RW,
4x DVD-RW, 24x CD-R/RW. The Sony VAIO VGN-A690 also has a built-in 802.11b/g/a Wi-Fi adapter, integrated V.90 56K modem, 1 PCMCIA Type I/II card slot with CardBus support, a Memory Stick Media Slot that supports Memory Stick, Memory Stick PRO, and Memory Stick DUO and these ports:
10/100/1000 gigabit ethernet, VGA out, headphone, microphone, 1 FireWire, 3 USB 2.0. Installed software includes Windows XP Home with Service Pack 2, Adobe Photoshop Elements, Quicken 2005 New User Edition, WinDVD, Microsoft Works 8.0, Norton Internet Security (90-day trial)and more.
